1. 선택한 재료와 컨셉 중 어느것이 먼저 오는가? 드로잉은 보통 처음 하는가 아니면 작업을 하는 도중에 하는가?
작업을 시작할 때, 재료보다는 항상 아이디어가 먼저 떠오르는 편이다. 각각의 컨셉을 뒷바침 하기 위해서는 매번 다른 재료가 필요하기 때문에 프로젝트마다 항상 내가 잘 모르는 재료나 기법에 대해서 공부하게된다. 예로, 아주 초보 단계지만 전자공학, 춤, 마술 등을 배운 적도 있다. 최근 6년간, 천이나 실을 주로 사용하다보니 텍스타일에 관심이 많아져서 요즘에는 직조기(베틀) 사용법을 배우고 있다.
대부분의 내 작업들은 공상에서 나온다. 나는 아무것도 하지 않는 시간을 사랑한다. 가만히 누워 머릿속에 내가 만들고 싶은 것을 그려보는 시간은 나에게 굉장히 중요하다. 다음 단계인 드로잉은 작업을 좀 더 자세하고 명확하게 할 수 있게 도와준다. 그러면 비로소 작업을 만들 준비가 완료 된다.

땅은 언제나 자연으로 돌아가려고 한다. 무엇을 짓든지간에 시간이 지나면 그것은 부식하고 자연으로 동화될 것이다. 월트 위트먼 생가에서 전시해줄 것을 초대 받았을 때, 나는 그의 시에서 영향을 받아 뭔가 자연과 어우러지는 것을 만들고 싶었다. 나는 그의 동상 뒤에 내 작업에 완벽히 어울릴 장소를 찾았다. 그곳은 숨겨진 장소로 나무 세그루에 둘러쌓여진 잡초가 무성한 곳이었다. 그곳에 서있으면 나뭇잎 사이로 따뜻한 햇살을 느끼고, 명상적인 기분을 느낄 수 있었다. 나는 철심으로 구조물을 만들고, 그것을 초록색 실로 반복해서 감았다. 멀리서 봤을때 내 작업은 주변 환경과 조화되어 보호색으로 위장한 어떤 물체처럼 보인다.

나는 한국에서 자라 공부를 위해 미국으로 건너왔다. 한국인이면서 외국인으로 사는 삶은 내 작업에 많은 영향을 끼쳤다. 처음 이곳에 왔을때, 나는 내 기억과 나의 다양한 사회적 역할(딸, 예술가, 시민 등등)에 대한 생각을 바탕으로 작업했다. 내 삶에 아직까지 어떤 엄청난 사건은 없었지만, 사람들 사이에서의 소소한 순간들, 그들을 응시하는 시간이나, 거리를 걷는 경험 등은 내 작업에 큰 영향을 미쳐왔다.
